Grandbabies and Glitter

My middle granddaughter turns 5 on Sunday. Five. That’s a very important age. She’s no longer a baby, nor is she a toddler. She’s a bona fide, card-carrying, kindergarten-aged GIRL. This is an exciting time despite what’s going on in the world. A child’s world view is finite and simple.

Glitter Is Magic

What is the fascination with glitter? I read on a friend’s social page a funny post about crafting. “You and 9 friends are crafting. One is using glitter. How many projects have glitter?” The obvious answer, of course, is ALL of them.

The grandbaby turning 5 is very much the sparkly one of the 3. She is petite, loves dress up, is fascinated with and gets involved with her big sister’s craft projects (big sister is 8 and will be 9 in February) and has a strong attraction to glitter. I purchased Glitter Is Messy

What exactly IS glitter?

According to Wikipedia

Glitter is an assortment of small, reflective particles that come in a variety of shapes and colors. Glitter particles reflect light at different angles, causing the surface to sparkle or shimmer. Glitter is similar to confetti, sparkles, or sequins, but somewhat smaller.

Since prehistoric times, glitter has been made from many different materials including stones such as malachite, and mica,[1] as well as insects[2] and glass.[3] Modern glitter is usually manufactured from plastic and is rarely recycled leading to calls from scientists for bans on plastic glitter.[4]

But… Glitter IS Pretty

There are new types of glitter out that are far less destructive and messy. Glitter can be cleaned up (usually) with a damp rag or sponge. Art teachers and elementary classroom staff can attest to the power of water. Even a lint roller can work magic.

There are things like glitter glue, glitter tape, glitter paint, glitter cardstock and even glitter vinyl for your craft projects. If you want to be able to contain glitter while crafting, try using a tray to contain the items you’re working on. Because glitter is reusable, you might carefully roll up the sides of the craft paper or other media to create a funnel to pour the glue back in.

How do YOU like to use glitter? During this holiday season glitter use ramps way up but it’s used for more than Christmas crafts. Let me know what you do to make your projects sparkle.

‘Tis the season…
